How PDF compression works here
Lossless re-packs the PDF without changing its content, keeping text fully selectable. Light, Medium, and Strong re-render each page as a JPEG at progressively lower quality and resolution, which dramatically shrinks scanned or image-heavy PDFs at the cost of text selectability. Everything runs locally — your file is never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does "Lossless" sometimes barely shrink my PDF?
- Lossless mode only re-packs the file structure without touching content, so text-only PDFs that are already efficient may shrink very little. For big savings on scanned or image-heavy PDFs, use Light, Medium, or Strong.
- Why does compressed text become unselectable?
- Light, Medium, and Strong modes rasterize each page to a JPEG image to maximize compression. This flattens text into the image, so it is no longer selectable or searchable. Use Lossless if you need to keep text.
- Is my file uploaded for compression?
- No. Compression runs entirely in your browser. Your document never leaves your device.
